Why do I write?

I have been asked by many of my co-workers, friends and families on why I enjoy writing so much. I have a little story to tell on why I enjoy writing. This is a personal blog post to let everyone get to know me a little bit more and understand who I am.

The first reason that I picked up writing, was because of my loving mother. Growing up with a brother, each one of my parents had a child that they clung to and was obviously their favorite. My father was closer to my brother and I was my mother’s baby boy. She was always reading those romance fantasy novels. They brought her a great deal of joy. When I was seven years old, she challenged me to a poetry writing contest! We both entered the same contest. I ranked higher than her and my poem was published in a book. (Looking back, I think they pitied this seven-year-old child……. that poem was terrible.)

The next time I started writing was on video games. The games that I used to play were called MUDS or Multi-user dimensions. These games were all words and had no graphics. My imagination blossomed as I began to feel like I was a part of the game. One of the things we were graded on by the game makers was the ability to role play and tell a story. Again, my writing skills were tested, improved and utilized.

My dear mother passed away on the 15th of October 2005. I was seventeen years old and my family gave me the task of writing her eulogy and a poem for her funeral pamphlets. I was seventeen years old and I got to feel how it felt to put pen to paper on a topic that meant the world to me and the passion flowed onto the paper. I still have one of those pamphlets to remind me of what passionate writing truly is. The passion is the reason I write.
